#13: The Reggie Miller Rule and Shooting Fouls
A defender could do almost everything correctly and still hear a whistle. Reggie Miller understood angles, timing, and body position as well as any shooter of his generation, and one of his tricks involved extending or kicking a leg during a jumper to create contact with a nearby defender. Years after Miller retired, NBA officials began emphasizing a principle that reporters quickly labeled the Reggie Miller Rule: a shooter who unnaturally kicks a leg outward specifically to manufacture contact can be called for an offensive foul rather than rewarded with free throws.
