#5: The White House Once Faced the Water
When the White House was first designed, its primary orientation looked toward the Potomac River, which was then a key transportation route. As Washington developed inland, the focus of activity shifted away from the water and toward the city grid. Today, the more familiar north-facing facade reflects this change in urban importance. The building itself did not move, but its relationship to the city transformed entirely.
