
When central Floridians lay claim to Orlando, the first statement out of most people’s mouths will almost unequivocally sound Disney-related. But despite its sometimes-seedy reputation, bereft of anything interesting outside the hallowed walls of Bay Lake (the nearby municipality where all four of Disney’s Orlando-based theme parks are located), you’ll find top-notch tourist attractions for the entire family to enjoy at a fraction of the price. And while this list is part practical, part nostalgic, there still exists a world of Orlando (and Orlando-adjacent) fun and adventure to explore when you veer away from the path of the mouse.
#1: Wet ’n Wild (1977–2016)
Decades before Disney World opened its own water theme parks, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, Wet ‘n Wild was the choice waterpark, with the highest national attendance of any waterpark until 1999. Known for its sky-high slides, epic wave pool, and legendary lazy river, Wet ‘n Wild’s affordable price tag for Florida residents meant super long lines in the summertime when kids were out of school and parents needed to entertain them!
