A Member of The “Harlem Hellfighters” and how is adored by the dog on his lap
There is a possibility that this was just a nickname for the 369th Infantry Regiment, who presented their services in both the World Wars. A large number of African-Americans wanted to serve in the US military during World War I but the US military didnt allow them. There were a lot of African-Americans and men from Puerto Rico, Cubans, and the West Indies who formed the 369th Regiment in 1917.
All decorated soldiers were called up to fight. The “Harlem Hellfighters”fought on the French soil, all suited up in their US military uniforms, during World War I. There was less racial hostility in that location. The 369th Infantry Regiment served the longest in the trenches and suffered the most casualties during World War I. This picture shows one such brave individual, giving warmth by cuddling a dog.
