California was once known worldwide for citrus farming, especially lemons, but urban growth, droughts, and changing agricultural economics have transformed many former orchard towns. Areas that once depended on citrus production now have little or none remaining. The decline reflects decades of water shortages and shrinking profits for smaller family farms.
