Contemporary buyers encounter luxury watches more as objects of craftsmanship, collecting, fashion, and status. Certain models from highly sought-after manufacturers can cost thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, while scarcity can push resale prices even higher. Younger enthusiasts have helped create an active online watch culture, but many of their peers see little reason to spend substantial money on technology whose fundamental function has been superseded.
