#11: Christ the Redeemer
Brazil erected this giant statue of Jesus atop Corcovado Mountain in 1931, where it overlooks Rio de Janeiro. Since then, similarly massive statues have appeared on hilltops in Portugal, Bolivia, Vietnam, and Poland. In the middle of the twentieth century, communities sought powerful visual expressions of faith, protection, and hope as they faced uncertain times.
