The Titanic’s Captain (RMS Titanic)
Captain Edward John Smith and Lord James Pirrie were photographed in 1911, barely a year before the Titanic’s first voyage. Smith was a well-known captain who had commanded a number of major ships over his career.
Captain Smith was reportedly sleeping in his cabin when the Titanic collided with the iceberg. He tried everything in his power to get people off the ship and onto lifeboats, but he couldn’t save himself. Some believe he drowned, while others say he shot himself in the head with a revolver.
