#20: Salton Sea (Imperial and Riverside Counties)
The Salton Sea was created in 1905 when floodwaters from the Colorado River breached an irrigation canal, filling the dry Salton Sink. This accidental flooding lasted two years and formed the modern lake. In the mid-20th century, the Salton Sea was a popular resort spot, attracting celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, who visited for water skiing, fishing, and boating.
