This humorous prank, which is performed once again on newly enlisted sailors who have just joined the submarine corps, is another aspect of life aboard a United States Navy submarine. The most typical time for this kind of practical joke to take place is when the machinery is being serviced. In order to obtain “relative bearing grease,” the “chief” would send one of the new sailors to the supply deck to inquire about it.
As soon as the sailor arrived, the supply officer informed him that the final canister had been distributed to another crew in order to fulfil their maintenance responsibilities. In a fruitless effort to carry out the instruction, the sailor would be forced to rush around the submarine and chase after a large number of other crew members as a result of this.
