Family-Grams
It comes as a pleasant surprise that British submariners, in contrast to their counterparts in the United States Navy, are permitted to “talk” to their families once per week. This translates to the fact that they are only able to send (and receive) a single message that is no longer than sixty characters in length.
It was not uncommon for either party to completely omit punctuation in order to cram as much information as possible into the messages that were sent back and forth. Both parties did this for the same reason. During their journey at sea, which lasted for 150 days, this will keep the sailors motivated.
