A Long-Lasting and Meaningful Relationship
People who serve in the same position and go into battle together generally create bonds that cannot be broken easily. This is something that is especially true for people who have served their country aboard a submarine. They have a unique perspective on things.
It is very likely that you will become very close with your fellow countrymen if you are forced to spend months upon months (and even years upon years) cooped up in a tin can and submerged in water. It is not unusual for sailors to mention that even many years after they have been discharged, they continue to attend reunions and feel as though they have never been parted from one another; this is an example of genuine comradeship.
