The membership of the armed forces has traditionally been composed of a large majority of men throughout the entirety of the military’s existence on this planet. It would appear that males have been combating men ever since the dawn of time, while women have been satisfied to stand by and watch.
In the latter half of the 20th century, a variety of positions that were traditionally designated for males but have since been opened up to females as a result of shifts in both the nature of war and public perceptions of the obligations of military service. Beginning in 2010, women were given the opportunity to join the submarine corps of the United States Navy.
