#3: Thaipusam – Malaysia
Thaipusam turns Batu Caves into a marathon of devotion every January or February, honoring Lord Murugan, the Tamil god of war and victory. Pilgrims walk miles barefoot, often climbing 272 steps to the cave, carrying offerings or elaborate kavadi frames pierced into their skin. Drums, chants, and the scent of incense fill the air as devotees seek blessings, fulfill vows, or show gratitude. The festival dates back to the 18th century and remains one of Malaysia’s most intense celebrations.
