#4: Las Luminarias – Spain
Las Luminarias sets San Bartolomé de Pinares ablaze every January 16 for Saint Anthony Abbot’s Day. Dating back to the 15th century, villagers once lit controlled flames to shield their animals from winter’s worst. Today, riders guide their horses through the fire, turning centuries-old ritual into a display of skill and daring. Modern safety rules haven’t dimmed the flames, and the festival keeps its deep-rooted link to livestock, community, and seasonal tradition alive with every leap.
