Paternal Anxiety
This time spent apart from Alyssa will be excruciatingly painful for Bert because each day will not only be a day during which they will be physically separated from one another, but also a day during which he will be aware that his daughter is in imminent danger. He emphasized that regardless of what he does, he will always perceive things from the perspective of a father. This is something that can’t be helped. He remarked, fighting back tears, that he is slowly submitting himself to the notion that, when the time comes, he would need to bid farewell to his daughter with the knowledge that he may never see her again. When the time comes, he will have to think about the possibility that he may never see her again.
It is challenging for him since he is aware that it is possible that he may only have her for a few more years. Despite this, he is aware that this is what Alyssa wants and that he is obligated to support her and the mission that she is on. Therefore, regardless of the circumstances, he makes it a point to maintain his excitement.
