Wreaking Havoc
Although polio had been around for centuries, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that the disease started wreaking havoc in America. In 1916, in New York City alone, there were over 27,000 cases recorded. Sadly, 6,000 of those infected didn’t make it. Those were some pretty terrible odds.
