Kyoto became Japan’s imperial capital in 794 and remained the center of political and cultural life for centuries. Unlike many Japanese cities, it avoided heavy bombing during World War II, preserving historic districts and temples. Ancient shrines, burial mounds, and wooden streets still exist alongside trains, offices, and modern shopping areas.
