#16: Lisbon, Portugal Covers Ancient Roman and Moorish Foundations
Lisbon grew from ancient settlements influenced by Phoenicians, Romans, and later the Moors. After the massive earthquake of 1755, much of the city was rebuilt, though ancient ruins remained underneath. Roman theaters, roads, and old Moorish walls can still be found between modern apartments, trams, and busy commercial districts.
