Major cities that are built over ancient ruins

Modern Barcelona grew from the Roman settlement of Barcino, founded during the first century BC. Parts of the ancient city still survive beneath streets and buildings in the Gothic Quarter. Visitors can see old Roman walls, workshops, and the Temple of Augustus while surrounded by cafés, apartments, and famous modern architecture.
