#12: The Isle of Demons and Medieval Fear
Not every phantom place began with measurement. Some began with dread. Early maps placed a frightening island near Newfoundland, surrounded by stories of spirits, strange cries, danger, and misfortune. The Isle of Demons belonged to a world where unknown coasts were not just empty spaces but moral and supernatural landscapes. It also became linked with the story of Marguerite de La Rocque, a French noblewoman reportedly marooned in the region in the 16th century.
