#14: Pepys Island and Confusion Near the Falklands
A sailor sees land, records a position, and gives the place a name. That can sound straightforward until one remembers how difficult navigation was in the South Atlantic. Pepys Island was reported in the 1680s and placed near the Falklands on maps for years. Later voyages could not locate it. Many historians believe the sighting was probably a mistaken or misplaced observation of the Falkland Islands themselves.
