#34: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Hurricanes
I have a friend who’s from Florida. She told me that when hurricanes hit, her family never bothers to evacuate; they just stock up on foods that they can grill—in case the power goes out—and ride it out. She even said it’s the time that they bond most with their neighbors, because all of their neighbors are also out grilling on their decks because the hurricane has knocked out their power.
The point of this story is to tell you that many Floridians have a very different attitude towards severe weather than many of the rest of us do. Where most of us would panic if we heard we were about to be hit by a hurricane, Florida, it seems, just shrugs.
