Bleach earned its place in countless laundry rooms because few household products announce “disinfected” quite as convincingly. Its reputation can also encourage the idea that a little more cleanliness never hurts. Stainless steel disagrees. Chlorine-containing products can attack the protective chromium-rich layer that helps stainless resist corrosion, and appliance manufacturers routinely warn against bleach on stainless doors, tubs, and finishes. Dishwasher makers have even cautioned that bleach-based wipes can contribute to rust on stainless-steel components.
