Before self-cleaning ovens became common, removing baked-on grease could involve strong commercial oven cleaner, rubber gloves, open windows, and a smell that lingered well beyond the job. Keeping the same can handy for a newer self-cleaning model can create an unexpected problem. Fabricators of pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens often warn against using commercial oven cleaners or protective oven coatings inside the self-cleaning cavity. Residue left behind can react during the extremely high-temperature cleaning cycle and damage or discolor the interior finish.
