Each generation borrows a little something here and a little something there from the generation before them, both philosophically and culturally. But since trends seem to cycle back around every 20 years, generations can find themselves neck-deep in the fads and fancies of the last two decades without really thinking twice. That might begin to explain why millennials lay claim to so many trends that, when all is said and done, Gen X (and likely the generation before THEM!) shepherded through the zeitgeist first.
#1: Curated Playlists (aka Mixtapes)
Milennials are the last generation to remember life before the internet. Just as cassette tapes were going out and CDs were coming in, millennials were coming of age, using pirated music from the internet (or law-abiding music downloads) to create highly tailored and deeply specific playlists for their friends and their crushes. But it ought to be noted that long before them, Gen X was doing this with much cruder technology, paving the way with some pretty rad playlists that perfectly summed up how we felt in every single moment.
