Mosby’s Treasure
John Singleton Mosby was a Confederate soldier in the 1860s. He formed a band of raiders who ambushed Union soldiers and captured over 40 troops in Virginia without firing a single shot. Legend has it that he left the courthouse in Fairfax with a sack full of precious stones, jewelry, and family heirlooms, all of which originally belonged to plantation owners.
On his way back home, he caught wind that a Union troop was prepared to ambush his group of guerilla raiders, so he buried everything in between two trees, which he marked with an X to retrieve later. He later sent seven men to retrieve the goods, but they were caught and executed.
