Dillinger’s Small Bills
John Dillinger was one of America’s most famous gangers of the 20th century. He would normally spend his springs in Manitowish Waters, but he received a call that the police learned of his gang’s hideout. FBI agents stormed his lodge, but he managed to escape through the back.
He supposedly fled the scene holding onto a suitcase containing roughly $200,000 in small banknotes. According to the legend, he swiftly buried the suitcase somewhere in his backyard in an attempt to keep the money out of the hands of the authorities. However, three months later, he was shot dead in Chicago, and he never divulged the location of his suitcase to anyone.
