The Florentine Diamond
The Florentine Diamond was the largest pink gem in the entire world, according to historian Gordon Brook-Shepherd. As beautiful as it was, the 133-karat stone’s origins remain unknown, and where it is today is an even bigger mystery. It was last seen in the hands of the Habsburg royal family of Austria-Hungry but went missing sometime during World War 1.
Before its disappearance, the family deposited the Florentine Diamond in a Swiss bank, believing that they would take care of it while war tore the country apart. They untrusted it in the hands of lawyer Bruno Steiner, who was arrested and charged with fraud in 1924. Some believe that the Florentine Diamond was cut down and made into several smaller diamonds.
