#3: Matrix (1999) — Agent Smith Is the Real “One”
Neo appears to fulfill the prophecy, but one theory mischievously argues that Agent Smith better fits its ultimate function. Smith becomes an anomaly the Matrix cannot contain, spreads through the entire system, and forces a massive reset when Neo finally allows himself to be absorbed. The machines restore balance only after Smith is destroyed. Canon still identifies Neo as the One, naturally, but treating Smith as the true destabilizing chosen figure makes their rivalry feel much more symbiotic.
