Construction beneath Istanbul uncovered the long-lost Port of Theodosius, a major Byzantine harbor. Excavations revealed shipwrecks, cargo remains, and harbor infrastructure dating back over a thousand years. The discovery reshaped understanding of Constantinople’s trade networks and maritime life. It also significantly delayed the project as preservation took priority.
