Everyone’s favorite video game company, Nintendo, was founded in 1889 in Japan. We’re sure you’ve played at least one of their games, whether it’s Donkey Kong or Super Mario Bros. When they first debuted, however, computers did not exist, and they were selling a type of Japanese playing card set called hanafuda.
In 1888, the Whitechapel neighborhood of London was swept through a time of terror with a series of murders by a killer who was dubbed Jack the Ripper. He became so famous that over a century later, he still lives on in pop culture. Jack the Ripper was never identified or caught, and he was still fresh in the minds of Londoners when 1889 rolled around.
