Spring training is underway, which means another year of tuning in to see how your favorite team is facing up to the competition before the season’s official clock starts counting down (March 27th, 2025, if you’re curious.) We thought it would be fun (and funny) to take a look back in time at some of the pre-season uniforms that graced ball fields across the nation, including some combos that teams are already bringing back into play.
#1: Chicago White Sox – Shorts Experiment (1976)
Perhaps the most memorable (and infamous) spring training uniform experiment came when the Chicago White Sox debuted a white jersey with a navy blue collar and matching navy shorts. That’s right, shorts. Baseball, which has practically become synonymous with its strict uniform code (until this year, Yankees players weren’t permitted to grow facial hair), took a sharp left turn with this one. Though the uniform change was intended to keep players cool, the sight of their bare legs drew more laughs than admiration. The team nixed them shortly thereafter.
