#15: Crazy Samurai Musashi (2020) — Tak Sakaguchi
Tak Sakaguchi faced a uniquely exhausting challenge in Crazy Samurai Musashi, also released internationally under titles including Crazy Samurai: 400 vs. 1. The film’s central attraction is an extraordinarily long continuous action sequence in which Sakaguchi’s swordsman battles wave after wave of opponents with almost no conventional editing to disguise fatigue. Rather than shooting a few seconds of choreography and assembling the fight afterward, the production required Sakaguchi and the stunt performers to maintain timing, movement, reactions, and safety across an extended take. That meant exhaustion could not simply be acted as the battle progressed—it naturally accumulated. Sakaguchi’s movements gradually become heavier, his breathing intensifies, and the physical effort increasingly registers on his body. The sequence turns fatigue itself into part of the dramatic structure, making the audience experience the passage of time alongside the performer.
