J.K. Rowling has said that Dolores Umbridge from the Harry Potter series was heavily inspired by a teacher she disliked. Rowling even borrowed the teacher’s fondness for small decorative accessories. The character became one of modern fiction’s most hated villains because her behavior felt uncomfortably realistic to many readers.
