#22: The Trial of the Chicago 7
Year: 2020
A semi-recent riveting historical film about American politics in the 1960s is The Trial of the Chicago 7. There have long been clashes between police and protestors, but the repeated protests to try and put an end to the Vietnam War became increasingly violent over time. Thousands of people protested in Chicago ahead of the Democratic party’s convention, and while hundreds were arrested, prosecutors decided to put seven people on trial.
Focusing on the actual protest and the ensuing trial, the film does an awful lot to portray what happened accurately, from the casting choices to the script. In the movie, the defendants’ many attempts to disrupt and mock the court recount events that actually happened to gain media attention for the ridiculous and unjust trial.
