#20: Jay-Z (2001)
Jay-Z’s MTV Unplugged special became one of the franchise’s most unexpected success stories. Backed by The Roots, he traded samples and programmed beats for a full live band without losing any of the energy that made his music popular. Tracks such as “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem),” “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” and “Big Pimpin'” took on a new life with horns, drums, and live instrumentation. Released as an album later that year, the performance showed mainstream audiences that hip-hop could thrive in a format originally associated with rock and singer-songwriters.
