#12: The New York Dolls
Formed in New York City in 1971, the New York Dolls quickly became one of the most talked-about live bands in the city. David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, and the rest of the lineup mixed loud rock with blues influences while wearing makeup, high heels, and clothing that challenged expectations. Their albums sold modestly, but performances at venues like the Mercer Arts Center attracted devoted followers. Many mainstream listeners dismissed the band outright, yet later generations of punk and glam metal musicians pointed to them as a major influence.
