#5: The Village People
The Village People formed in 1977 under French producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, with Victor Willis serving as the original lead singer. Songs like “Y.M.C.A.,” “Macho Man,” and “In the Navy” became worldwide disco staples that still fill dance floors today. Their themed costumes made every performance instantly recognizable, but plenty of critics dismissed the group as a novelty. During the anti-disco movement in 1979, they became one of the easiest targets, even as their biggest hits continued to thrive.
