#9: Slade
Slade, formed in Wolverhampton, England, in 1966, had their biggest breakthrough during the early 1970s with chart-toppers like “Cum On Feel the Noize,” “Mama Weer All Crazee Now,” and “Merry Xmas Everybody.” Vocalist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea wrote many of the band’s biggest hits, several of which featured intentionally unusual spellings. Their loud singalong style attracted huge crowds across Britain and Europe. Critics, however, often claimed the formula became repetitive despite the band’s remarkable chart success.
