Must Try Southern Foods

December 30, 2021 by Adam Page

You know that feeling you get when you’re hungry and the only thing on your mind is FOOD? That’s what we’re here for. We’ve compiled a list of must try southern foods to help satisfy those cravings and keep them coming back for more.

1) Fried Chicken

Fried chicken is one of those things that can’t be beat, no matter where it comes from. The key to getting crispy skin every time is frying at a low temperature over a long period of time.

2) Grits

Many people don’t know what grits are but they should because grits are delicious! Basically, grits are made up of cornmeal which has been ground into tiny pieces or “grit” hence the name. The best way to eat them is with plenty of butter, salt and pepper!

3) Gumbo

Gumbo soup usually starts with a roux which is made out of cooking oil and flour. This roux gives the gumbo its distinct color and taste. After the roux has been prepared, you add in things like the base of the soup (vegetables), chicken, sausage or shrimp!

4) Fried Green Tomatoes

I know what you’re thinking. How can tomatoes be fried? Well they can when they’re green! Green tomatoes are usually smaller than ripe ones so they make the perfect candidates for frying.

5) Pimento Cheese

Pimento cheese may sound super weird but it’s so good. In fact, not only is pimento cheese delicious, it’s also pretty healthy for you too! Just make sure you get the low-fat version of this southern staple and try to use a whole wheat cracker (or if you’re like us and prefer the classic version grab some saltines).

6) Fried Okra

You might be thinking “what’s so good about okra?” If you’ve never had fried okra, then we’re here to tell you that it is indeed amazing. Just dip the small pieces in a batter and deep fry it to perfection!

7) Sweet Tea

Sweet tea is a must have in the south and there’s no way to make it wrong. Just steep some black tea with a little sugar and serve over ice!

8) Banana Pudding

Banana pudding is definitely one of our favorite southern desserts. It’s simple, sweet, and satisfying. Plus, it’s perfect for any occasion!

9) Peach Cobbler

Peach cobbler is the perfect summer dessert. It’s easy to make and always a hit with guests. The best part is that you can use any type of fruit you want!

10) Barbecue

There’s no way we could create a list of southern foods without including barbecue. Whether it’s pork, beef, or chicken, barbecue is always a winner. Just make sure you get some sauce on there and it’ll be that much better!

In conclusion, these are just some of the many amazing southern foods that you must try. Be sure to add them all to your list and get started on those taste bud adventures today.
