20 Myths People From the 1950s Believed

August 3, 2026 by Salvador Sallent

The 1950s are remembered for chrome appliances, suburban optimism, and absolute confidence in ideas that later looked questionable. Advertising, Cold War fear, limited research, and rapidly changing technology encouraged Americans to trust cigarettes, radiation machines, miracle medicines, and futuristic predictions. Some beliefs were genuinely widespread; others belonged mainly to marketers, doctors, conspiracy circles, or worried parents. These twenty myths reveal how modern progress could appear reassuring, scientific, and slightly ridiculous—all at the same time to ordinary families back then.

#1: Cigarettes Could Soothe an Irritated Throat

Cigarette advertising frequently borrowed medical authority. Brands quoted doctors, showed physicians in white coats, and promised smoother smoking or less throat irritation. These campaigns did not prove smoking was healthy, but they encouraged consumers to interpret professional imagery as reassurance. By the decade’s end, evidence linking cigarettes to lung cancer was becoming harder to ignore. The myth survived because advertising repeated comfort more loudly than public-health warnings could compete at the time back then too.
