#18: The Inner Sanctum of Ise Grand Shrine, Japan
Ise Grand Shrine is one of Shinto’s most sacred sites, but visitors see it from a respectful distance. The innermost sanctuary areas are off-limits to the public, with access restricted to shrine priests and members of the Imperial family. The buildings are also ritually rebuilt every 20 years, preserving form through renewal rather than permanence. Western tourists sometimes expect sacred architecture to reveal itself through entry. Ise teaches the opposite lesson: holiness may depend on not crossing the fence.
