#2: The Hall of Records, Mount Rushmore, South Dakota
Behind the carved presidential faces of Mount Rushmore lies one of America’s strangest unfinished ideas: the Hall of Records. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum imagined a grand chamber preserving the nation’s founding documents and historical story. The full vision was abandoned, but in 1998 a repository was placed inside the hall entry: a teakwood box, titanium vault, and granite capstone containing porcelain panels. Visitors cannot go in. The presidents stare outward. The secret room stays in the mountain.
