#7: Subterranean Voids Near the Great Sphinx, Egypt
Few ancient monuments attract hidden-chamber speculation like the Great Sphinx. Surveys over the years have detected cavities or anomalies around and beneath parts of the Sphinx enclosure, but claims of a dramatic “Hall of Records” remain unproven. The restricted zones are real in a practical sense: excavation and access are tightly controlled to protect the monument. The mystery survives because the Sphinx is already strange enough. Give a lion-human statue a shadow, and people will imagine a doorway.
