#14: Partially Below-Ground Lower Levels
A split-level home commonly featured a lower level situated partially below ground level; this level was typically used as a family room, TV room, or rec room. It also created a novel architectural style, one that became synonymous with suburban America in the years following World War II. Fun fact: It’s estimated that more than half of life on Earth, including mammals, reptiles, insects, amphibians, and, of course, dedicated video game enthusiasts, spend a portion of their lives underground.
