In 2000, a Canadian teenager known online as MafiaBoy launched huge DDoS attacks against Yahoo, CNN, Amazon, eBay, and other major websites during the dot-com boom. The attacks overwhelmed servers and temporarily shut services down. Authorities estimated the financial damage reached roughly $1.2 billion, making it one of the biggest cyberattacks of its time.
