#17: William H. Carney – First Black Medal of Honor Recipient
William H. Carney was the first African American to receive the Medal of Honor. He was recognized for his heroic actions during the Civil War, where he saved the regiment’s flag during the assault on Fort Wagner in 1863. He demonstrated exceptional bravery by enduring injuries while encouraging the troops. Although the Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 1900, his actions were among the first to be recognized with this award. Courage transcends skin color and resonates through time.
