#11: Separate Accounts
The question of whether a married couple should combine their finances or keep them separate is one that has been debated at length. Some people prefer to combine their finances, reasoning that keeping your finances separate can make a relationship feel very transactional. Others prefer to keep their finances completely separate, which makes it more straightforward to know who owns what assets, especially if one partner in the relationship earns more than the other.
Whatever your opinion on this, I think this writer makes a good point. Even if you do decide to combine your finances, it’s not a bad idea for each to have one account that is theirs alone. It can be nice to have money that you are allowed to do whatever you want with, and also, if things go terribly wrong, it can be nice to have money of your own should you need to get away from your partner.
