#17: Time to Leave the Nest
Here’s a pretty controversial take on living with your parents. This writer argues that if your parents are struggling financially and you are living with them as an adult, you should contribute towards household finances and even pay rent – or move out. This is one that touches a nerve with a lot of people who have found themselves in situations where they have to live at home. It also varies in different cultures and countries.
But personally, I think it makes a lot of sense, especially when you consider that if your parents are struggling to get their finances in order now, then it may be that when it comes time for them to retire, they will have nothing to live on and you will be financing them. So I guess that really it’s a question of: would you rather pay your parents now or when they retire?
